State Creation In Nigeria



  • General Yakubu Gowon created 12 states in Nigeria on 27th May 1967.
  • General Murtala Mohammed increased the states from 12 to 19 on the 3rd of February 1976.
  • On the 23rd of September, 1987 Gen. Ibrahim B. Babangida created 2 additional states, Katsina and Akwa Ibom to make the states 21.
  • Gen. Ibrahim B. Babangida created 9 states, making 30 states on 27th August 1991.
  • On 1st oct. 1996 General sani Abacha announced 6 states making 36 and the FCT Abuja.

Origin Of The Name Nigeria

THE ORIGIN OF THE NAME NIGERIA

Nigeria as a country is located in West Africa between latitude 40 North of the equator and longitude 30-40 East of the Greenwich meridian.
The name Nigeria was given by miss Flora Shaw in 1898, who later married Fredrick Lord Lugard who amalgamated the Northern and Southern protectorate in Nigeria in the year 1914 and died in 1945.

The official language in English and the National’s motto is UNITY AND FAITH, PEACE AND PROGRESS.
